The first official forecast for the 2021 hurricane season is out. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting another active Atlantic hurricane season. It’s not too late to have impact windows and doors installed to protect your home and your family when the storms start coming.
NOAA’s hurricane experts are predicting, with what they say is 70% confidence, that the 2021 hurricane season will produce:
- 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher)
- 6 to 10 hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher),
- 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher)
“Now is the time for communities along the coastline as well as inland to get prepared for the dangers that hurricanes can bring,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “The experts at NOAA are poised to deliver life-saving early warnings and forecasts to communities, which will also help minimize the economic impacts of storms.”
There was talk earlier this year of moving the official start of hurricane season to May 15. Despite the fact that tropical systems have developed in May for the past eight years, the official dates for the 2021 hurricane season remain June 1 through November 30. (But savvy South Floridians know now not to wait until June 1 to keep an eye on the tropics.)
The activity in recent years wasn’t enough to change the starting date for the season (and the reason for that probably has absolutely nothing to do with weather!), but it was enough to prompt the scientists at NOAA to change the statistics used to determine when hurricane seasons are above-, near-, or below-average relative to the latest climate record. In the past, an average hurricane season had 12 named storms, with 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. Now, hurricane season is considered “average” if it produces 14 named storms, with 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.
NOAA has high level of confidence that we will have another very active hurricane season. If you live in Broward, impact windows can provide the peace of mind you and your family deserve – and you can finance your impact windows! Contact us for more information.
