Reading a product approval

What is a Florida Product Approval?

It is the state record showing that a window, door or mullion was tested and evaluated against the Florida Building Code. Each approval has a number (for example FL26942) and a revision (R7), and lists the sizes, design pressures, glass and anchoring the product is approved for. Building departments check it when they review a permit.

What do LMI and SMI mean on Mr. Glass documents?

LMI means large missile impact and SMI means small missile impact. Large-missile products are tested with a heavier projectile and are the usual requirement for openings in the lower part of a home; small-missile ratings apply to higher openings. The approval for each series says which test it passed.

What does design pressure (psf) mean?

Design pressure is the wind load a product is approved to resist, in pounds per square foot, shown as positive (pushing in) and negative (pulling out). The pressure your opening needs depends on the home’s location, height and exposure, and is set in the permit drawings.

Does an approval mean a series fits my opening?

Not on its own. The size, the glass, the design pressure and the installation method of your opening have to fall inside the limits of the approval. We match every opening to the current approval revision before the permit is filed.

Who installs Mr. Glass windows and doors in Broward County, Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County?

Sanctuary Windows and Doors LLC is an authorized Mr. Glass dealer and installer (Florida license CBC1267941). We measure, file the permit with the product approvals, install and schedule the inspections.

Where can I check an approval myself?

Search the number on the Florida Building Commission’s product approval site (floridabuilding.org) or in the Miami-Dade product control directory. Revisions change over time, so always check the current revision.

Check any approval in the Florida Product Approval search or the Miami-Dade product approvals (NOA). A series name alone does not establish suitability: match the revision, size limits, glass and installation conditions to your opening.
